Oyster Shells for Chickens

We serve our chickens  oyster shells right on the clean dirt along the edges of the rocks or trees.
We found that if we use bowls they get spilled, this way the spills can be where we want them and even kind of decorative. The goat said it looked nice.

Oyster shells provide both calcium and grit. Hens that are laying eggs need a source calcium to replace what they use in making their egg shells.

Putting the Oyster Shell along the edges of things keeps it from being walked in as much helping to keep the shells clean, and reduces waste.

The chickens will find it and eat what they need, and the firm soil is a better surface for pecking at oyster shells then the bottom of a smooth bowl.

Oyster shell also functions as grit to grind the stuff they eat.

She will digest and deposit oyster shell calcium, reconditioned as egg shell, and in their poop which I can add to our garden soil, providing a more bio-available form of calcium for our garden greens to absorb.

  1. Hey, thanks for the idea! I was googling images for "feeding oyster shells to chickens" and your post popped up and we are trying it right now! We've tried two different dishes that keep getting upended! I'm all for simplicity. Look forward to following your blog!
